Foley's Take: week of 08/31/26

🏀 It’s World Cup fever all over again! The FIBA Women’s World Cup kicks off this weekend as Team USA, carrying a 30-game win streak, goes for a fifth straight gold medal. On paper, they’re the heavy favorites, but here’s the skinny. A’Ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum, two of our superstars, just pulled out with injuries. Meanwhile France, who we only beat by one point during the Olympics, has eight WNBA players on their roster. How do you say YIKES in French? Head coach Kara Lawson, (chill vibes, fierce eyes, can't lose) will have to lean on the vets and hope the incredibly talented newbies can hit the ground running. USA tips off against China Friday September 4th (8:15 a.m. ET), then faces Italy Sunday September 6th (2:45 p.m. ET) and closes group play against Czechia Monday September 7th (2:45 p.m. ET). Catch every USA game on TNT, truTV and HBO Max. Let’s go!

đŸŽŸ The end of summer in NYC can only mean one thing
Honey Deuce me! The US Open is here, and it brings so many compelling storylines. Starting with Aryna Sabalenka, who’s chasing a third straight US Open title, but she's coming in without a grand slam title this year and two early finishes in her warm-up events. Meanwhile, Coco Gauff is on fire, winning the Cincy Open and her best results are on hard courts. And who’s that in the rear-view mirror? Jessica Pegula, Elena Rybakina and Naomi Osaka channeling her inner Allen Iverson. Every round is going to be lights out. And if that’s not compelling enough (who are you?) Serena and Venus Williams are playing doubles for the first time since 2022. Thursday wraps the second round, Friday and Saturday cover the third, with the round of 16 starting on Sunday. Coverage is across ESPN and the ESPN app. Hydrate, Honey Deuce, repeat.

🏐 Swap out the bases for a volleyball net and you have a HERSTORIC night in Chicago. This Sunday, Sept 6th, Wrigley Field hosts volleyball for the first time in the ballpark's history with a Big Ten/SEC doubleheader: Penn State vs. Kentucky at 7 p.m. ET, followed by Nebraska vs. Missouri at 9 p.m. ET, both on FOX. Nebraska is the team to beat in the country, going 33-1 and 20-0 in the Big Ten last season before a stunning five-set loss in the NCAA Regional Final. They’re out for revenge this year, so keep your eyes glued to the dynamic senior trio: Harper Murray, Bergen Reilly and Andi Jackson. And Kentucky-Penn State is not only a clash of national powers, but a battle of All-Americans: Kentucky's Brooklyn DeLeye and Penn State's Kennedy Martin will be killing it from every angle on the court. This is next-level women's volleyball. LFG!
