On Saturday during the NCAA men’s games, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame will announce the best basketball player at each position in the college game. In anticipation we connected with the legends those awards are named after and dubbed them the Naismith 5. Storied Sports will have exclusive interviews with those legends, Nancy Lieberman (PG), Cheryl Miller (PF), Katrina McClain (SF), Lisa Leslie (C) and Ann Meyers Drysdale (SG) and their announcements of who won each award the moment it happens: Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.
Make sure to follow us on Instagram @Storied.Sports and on LinkedIn to hear from each of these legendary women on why their award-winner is so deserving. But first, we’ve got these five absolute legends chopping it up about talent, legacy and who (Cheryl) was the biggest (Cheryl) trash-talker in the group on the court.
Cheryl. It was Cheryl.
You can see that moment yourself by clicking on the clip below. It’s amazing how under the radar these awards are, especially since the history of this game is more important than ever. Women’s basketball is surging in popularity at the college and professional levels, and you can thank Unrivaled for selling out a stadium in Philadelphia to watch the 3x3 version.
It is why these conversations matter, and so fun to hear the respect they have for each other, and who much they absolutely LOVE the game. Would the Naismith 5 beat a starting five from today? You can hear their answers below, and they are filled with confidence and affection after years of scouting each other on the court.
It’s important to honor the women who built the game. In a big way.
Cheryl. It was Cheryl, and Lisa, Nancy, Annie and Katrina and plenty of others. That’s why A’ja, Angel, Caitlin, Breanna and the hundreds of other athletes playing now can finally be seen on March Madness™. Sadly, it wasn’t that long ago that the women’s tournament was barred from even using the phrase.
Watch the clips, raise a glass, honor the legends, enjoy the Final Four.
